Prescription Drug Coverage
(PDP) is a Prescription drug plan.
These are stand-alone plans that are usually used to work in combination with a medicare supplement plan.
Once again, these plans only provide coverage for prescription drugs, not medical coverage.
Depending on the classification or “Tier” of the drugs you need to have covered, you will have copays when your prescriptions are filled. In most plans, basic and common generic drugs are covered for little or no cost.
If you take higher-tier or specialized drugs for a specialized condition, you may have a higher copay per prescription fill.
PDP plans are also regulated by CMS (Center for Medicare Services).
Also, you must have at least a basic CMS-approved prescription drug plan (creditable coverage). If you do not have a prescription drug plan in place and then decide that you need one after you have gone uncovered past the allowed amount of time (referred to as uncovered months).. Then, a prepayment penalty will be added to your future Prescription Drug Plans premium.
